Haircare routine for Kinky-haired Naturalistas
Soooo afro !
If you are a kinky curly haired woman, you probably know that wash day is the easiest part of your journey – if you do section your hair during the process.
Type 4 hair is somehow the driest hair type. Due to its afro texture and kinks, oils secreted by your scalp are unable to reach the tip of your hair. Thus your hair takes even more time to get dirty and does not need to be washed as often as type 3 hair for instance. Each hair type has its own hair care routine.
4a, 4b and 4c hair do not need to be washed every two days such as type 1 or 2, and in the long run may be damaged if you do so. The most important is to keep your hair moisturised using your water and oil mix spray bottle and your favourite moisturiser or leave-in.
1. Use a clarifiyng shampoo.
As you may only wash your hair every week or every two weeks, use a shampoo that will thoroughly clean your hair and scalp twice a month. Hence a clarifying shampoo will let your scalp breathe and clean up all products you have been applying on your hair when you moisturise it daily. We recommend you to use Silicon Mix shampoo.
Although, co-washing might be more convenient for some short-haired naturalistas. It allows your hair to keep the moisture in while growing out. We recommend you to use Shea Moisture Coconut & Hibiscus conditioning cleanser.
To minimise dryness in your hair due to the clarifying shampoo, you can alternately use a shampoo with sulfate and a sulfate-free shampoo.
Before washing, divide your hair into sections and use the baggy method as a prepoo. Apply oil on your hair and wrap it in with a heat-process cap. After shampooing, apply a deep treatment on your hair and repeat the process for an hour at least, to let the treatment seep into your hair. After rinsing it out, (finger) detangle your hair, twist it up and let it air dry. Don’t forget to seal the moisture with your favourite oil.
Moisturising your hair daily is the key.
Water is your hair’s partner in crime ! A spray bottle with few drops of oil will do the trick. Try to apply your moisturising cream every two days on your hair and drink a litre of water per day at least.
Not to mention: indeed, kinky hair is the most fragile hair so try not to manipulate your hair so often to minimise breakage.
To fresh start with your natural type 4 hair, you can use Shea Moisture Raw hea Butter Extra Moisture Transitioning Milk in which you are given products to revitalise and moisturise your hair.
